Qualcomm recently launched a new mobile platform in Beijing, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, further enriching its portfolio of platforms supporting Android flagship smartphones. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is considered an affordable alternative to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which delivers flagship-level experiences in AI, audio, camera, gaming and connectivity.
Key features of this new flagship platform include support for powerful device-side generative AI capabilities that support a wide range of AI LLMs; always-aware ISP; hyper-immersive mobile gaming experiences; breakthrough connectivity; and lossless HD audio.
Further, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 supports a variety of digital precision (INT4, INT8, INT16, FP16) and the device-side deployment of a 10-billion-parameter LLM.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Snapdragon 8s Gen 3
Compared with the previous two Snapdragon flagship platforms, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 adopts a similar CPU architecture as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but all the main frequency parameters are lower and close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. However, like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 supports generative AI, and can also enhance the GPU characteristics through AI, further improving the performance and energy efficiency. The related new smartphones will bring a strong AI experience for users, which is stronger than the ones carrying the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
At the launch event, Qualcomm invited ecosystem partners from ByteDance and NetEase to demonstrate the support of Qualcomm AI and Elite Gaming technologies for the mobile internet ecosystem. It is believed that Qualcomm will be an important player in the era of generative AI.
In terms of photography and videography, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 supports a single camera of up to 200 MP, as well as smooth switching between three cameras. The photographic experience in a dark light environment is also improved. It also supports semantic segmentation between photos and videos, and AI-assisted image features.
In the gaming area, light tracing ability, based on Qualcomm’s Adreno image motion engine 2.0, has been significantly improved. The lossless HD audio function, based on Qualcomm’s Aqstic speaker amplification technology, and head tracking function allow users to have a better spatial audio experience.
The newly launched Xiaomi Civi 4 Pro is the first smartphone model to carry the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. Other mainstream smartphone brands such as HONOR, iQOO, realme and Redmi will release new models will this platform. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is expected to actively popularize AI smartphones.
